PRESS RELEASE:

"..a love-letter to a life filled with adventure, funny and poignant, Lorkin exuding the timelessness of a brilliant performer"

-- The List Magazine, UK****

Evoked memories of the greats – Garland and Fitzgerald to name but two... Her style truly was of the legendary late night clubs in New York; Lorkin uses this simple fact to great success” – Broadway Baby, UK ****

She's from Down Under. She's got a down coat, and even wrote a song about it. She bought it during her first freezing winter in Manhattan, when she arrived with little except her musical passion, optimism and determination to work in New York. That was in the late 1970's. She spent eight years in New York. “I had my songs, I had a green card, I had a husband and I was playing swanky piano bar clubs. The late Blossom Dearie used to come and hear me on Madison Avenue." And Linn was exotic, coming from New Zealand. "Nobody knew where that was!"

This cool Kiwi lady is charismatic and upbeat and her original songs and anecdotes evoke a golden bygone New York, 1977-1985.

"The beauty and detail with which she relates her narrative gives you a real sense of what it was like to be part of such an up-and-coming time.. a great quality of this show was the sense that I was safe in the performer's hands”----Broadway Baby, UK

Adorable, classy, charming and fun.”--Three Weeks, Edinburgh ****

"Vivacious and engaging performer … "The Stage, UK

HEY, PIANO BAR LADY! was developed through a series of house concerts in Berlin, Auckland and New York. "New York had given me so much, I wanted to write a show about my time there". It has an entirely original score which is very much in Broadway musical tradition but is more slanted to jazz because, as Linn says, "I'm a jazz player". Some songs were inspired by actual events and others were composed for the show. "Love Slipped In", while her own song, has the feel of a standard by Cole Porter or Rogers & Hart and, in fact, Linn still incorporates fragments of real standards in the show to lend authenticity to her piano bar scenes.

A longtime professional pianist and singer, Linn Lorkin has performed all over New Zealand, Australia and Europe and played with her own trio at "Ronnie Scott's", the prestigious London jazz club. She is also lead singer with The Jews Brothers Band, Australasia's premier klezmer group, and sings French chansons with the combo French Toast.  She can be heard singing many of her own songs ( as well as other people's) on fourteen albums, available on the Rouge Records label.  An adaptive, fluid pianist, she possesses a sensuous vocal quality reminscent of British songstress Cleo Laine.

Linn has previously appeared at Don't Tell Mama in 2010, and at The Triad in 2011.   She was well received: A lively combination of beautiful singing, exquisite story-telling and dazzling jazz piano-playing"--Magee Hickey, WCBS-TV, New York

Most recently Linn has performed this show in Auckland, Berlin and Edinburgh, at the Fringe, the largest arts festival on the planet, where she was a ThreeWeeks "Pick of the Fringe" 2012.  For more information, visit www.linnlorkin.com. Prior to her performances at Don't Tell Mama, Linn Lorkin will appear in the 4th Annual United Solo Theatre Festival (the biggest solo theatre festival in the world) on Friday, November 1, 9 PM, at Theatre Row on 410 W. 42nd Street.
